USTA Chief Medical Officer Brian Hainline elected to board of U.S. Anti-Doping Agency

October 4, 2010 03:04 PM
The USTA announced that Chief Medical Officer Brian Hainline, M.D., has been elected as a Board Member of the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), the independent anti-doping agency for Olympic related sports in the United States. Dr. Hainline will serve as one of two National Governing Body (NGB) representatives, and his four-year term is effective immediately. As the national governing body of tennis, the USTA participates fully in the USADA’s anti-doping effort.

The USADA’s vision is to be the guardian of the values and life lessons learned through true sport by preserving the integrity of competition, inspiring true sport for present and future generations of U.S. athletes, and protecting the rights of U.S. athletes.

"True sport means fair play, respect for one’s competitor and respect for the fundamental fairness of competition," said Lucy S. Garvin, Chairman of the Board and President, USTA. "As a NGB representative to the USADA’s Board, Brian provides a key link between our great sport of tennis and the USADA’s vision."

"The USTA is fully committed to the USADA’s mission, and we are thrilled that Brian has been given the honor of serving as one of their Board members," said Gordon Smith, Executive Director, USTA. "The USADA is not simply an anti-doping enforcement agency, but promotes the richness of clean and fair competition in all sports, mirroring the USTA Chief Medical Officer’s mission of promoting and developing the healthy growth of tennis."

The USADA Board is comprised of two representatives from national governing bodies, two elite athletes, one coach and five independent members. Dr. Hainline was elected along with former track and field Olympic gold medalist Edwin Moses.
