The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences honored the US Open Tennis Championships and CBS Monday night with the George Wensel Technical Achievement Award for the outstanding 3D broadcasts of the 2010 US Open at the 32nd Annual Sports Emmy Awards in a special ceremony at Frederick P. Rose Hall at Lincoln Center in New York City.
CBS broadcast the 2010 US Open in 3D on Labor Day weekend and finals weekend, making it the first time ever that the US Open was shown in 3D.
For the special telecasts, CBS added 3D cameras overhead and near the ground level of Arthur Ashe Stadium, making viewers feel as if they were on the court with their favorite players.
A special 3D Panasonic Showcase was also in Louis Armstrong Stadium, and two more 3D viewing galleries were available in SmashZone and the South Plaza so fans on the grounds could watch the special 3D weekend telecasts, as well as those at home with the special gear.
The Sports Emmy Award recipients were chosen by a Blue Ribbon Panel of industry peers, and the awards were presented by a distinguished group of sports figures and television personalities.
