Top seeds advance on first full day of play at USTA Girls' Nationals

August 8, 2011 01:11 PM
Sarah Hu
Everything went smoothly for the first full day of matches for both the Girls’ 16s and the Girls’ 18s as the Southern California sunshine continued to shine on San Diego.
The Girls’ 16s headed into the second round with just a half dozen seeds not surviving, the highest of which was No. 10, Yuki Chiang of Ojai, California, who fell to Emma Alderman of Hingham, Mass., 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Lauren Marker (16) and 17-32 seeds Erin Larner, Alexandria Najarian, Brittany Lindl and Jillian Rooney also didn’t make it to the third round. Fourth seeded Spencer Liang of Potomac, Maryland, survived a scare from Summer Collins of Montgomery, Alabama, who held tough throughout the match, but the seed took over in the end for a 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 win.
In the Girls’ 18s, the seeds all had byes on Sunday and most of the matches went quickly. A few of the tougher competitions worth noting were Akiko Okuda of Tenafly, N.J. over Chicago’s Jerricka Boone, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1; Queens Village, N.Y.'s Leighann Sahagun defeated Zoe Katz of Los Angeles, Calif. 3-6, 6-2, 6-3; and Melissa Kopinski of Palos Hills, Ill., defeated Elaine Baik of Mukilteo, Wash., 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.
The Babolat Player of the Day honors went to Sarah Hu. The Oakland, California, native lost a three and a half hour match to Maria Smith in the Girls’ 16s. The two played some great points and when Smith took it 6-4 in the third set, Hu smiled at her opponent and sincerely wished her well in the rest of the tournament. Hu represents the hard work and sportsmanship on the court expected of the USTA Girls’ Nationals Babolat Player of the Day.
On Monday, the Girls’ 18s will hit the courts of the Barnes Tennis Center first thing in the morning, beginning at 8:30 a.m., followed by two rounds of doubles. The Girls’ 16s will begin at 3:00 pm and have a day off from doubles.
