GUADALAJARA, Mexico - Jon Rydberg (Oakdale, MN) started the 2011 Parapan American wheelchair tennis competition with a solid win at the Telcel Tennis Center in Guadalajara, Mexico on Sunday. Rydberg came out strong in the first set, serving well and showing his Parapan Am experience, taking the first set handily 6-0 from Augusta Alvarez of Peru.
In the second set, the American struggled out of the gate, dropping two tough games to his older Peruvian opponent. Rydberg seemed tight and wasn’t at his best as his first set dominance was now gone, but it was only a matter of time before he returned to his first set form. After pushing back and bringing the match to 1-2, Rydberg turned it on from the other side of court, taking the next five games and finishing off Alvarez 6-2 to take the set and the first round match.
On Monday, Rydberg will face Daniel Rodrigues of Brazil as he continues his quest to medal at the "Fiesta De Americana!"
