Indian Wells, Calif. – Even though Carmen "Muñe" Agosto and Ernesto "Tito" Agosto of San Juan, P.R., have made many trips to previous USTA League National Championships, this weekend’s 3.5 Senior Nationals marked a memorable "first" for the tennis couple, who have been married since 1971.
The 63-year-old Carmen, a tennis player since the early 1980s, has captained numerous USTA Caribbean Section women’s teams from the 2.5 to the 4.0 level and has reached the League Nationals a remarkable 18 times.
Her husband, 67-year-old Ernesto, has also been the captain of multiple Caribbean Section men’s teams and has reached the League Nationals on six occasions, winning three National titles.
Despite their many trips to League Nationals, this weekend at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden was the very first time that Carmen and Ernesto captained their teams in the same location at the same time.
When both teams won tough matches to capture the Caribbean Section Championships earlier this year to earn a trip to Indian Wells, both teams celebrated together.
"We had a very hard time in our Sectionals. We didn’t have any expectations to win. I couldn’t believe it." Carmen said. "We enjoyed that day. It was a pleasant surprise."
Being here together in Indian Wells for the Nationals has been special for Carmen and Ernesto. With three other married couples among their teammates and a total of 30 people in their traveling party, Carmen said, "We are like a family."
When it comes to playing in a USTA League National, Ernesto said, "It is a splendid experience. We have enjoyed it because we get to meet many people from different locations and we have made many friends. It’s a great event."
Carmen says every time she plays USTA League tennis and captains a team, it is a new experience for her.
"It’s a new group, it’s a different group of friends and I enjoy that. It’s fun. It’s like a new game," said Carmen, who is serving her last year as captain of her USTA league team in Puerto Rico.
As current team captains, Carmen and Ernesto recognized and thanked Brenda Rivera, Caribbean Section league coordinator, for her help and assistance.
