SAN DIEGO, Calif. -
The surprises were few and far between in San Diego today, as the USTA Girls’ 16 & 18 Nationals matches moved smoothly into the next round under partly sunny skies without a drop of humidity in sight.

In the Girls’ 16s, all but two seeds advanced. Julia Schroeder of Winnetka, Illinois, squeezed past No. 13 Mia King of Hendersonville, North Carolina, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3; and Manon Peri of Los Angeles (17-32) lost to fellow Californian Mary Closs (Menlo Park), 6-4, 6-2. Also in that draw, No. 7 Sivan Krems of Thousand Oaks had to fight her way past Chloe Willetts of Winston Salem, North Carolina, 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 (There were no Girls’ 16s doubles matches today).

The big upset in the Girls’ 18s was in the doubles, with the top seeded Gabrielle Andrews and Taylor Townsend losing in a very close 7-6(5), 5-7, 1-0(10/6) to Jennifer Brady and Kendal Woodard. Neither Gabrielle nor Taylor, the seventh and ninth seeds respectively, had any problem in their singles, both advancing easily as did most of the other top players. The only seeds dropping in the Girls’ 18s today were two 17-32 alpha seeded players: Hayley Carter of Columbia, South Carolina, took out Denise Starr of Boca Raton, Florida, 6-4, 6-3; and Frances Altick of Monroe, Louisiana, lost to Amanda Muliawan of Wycoff, New Jersey, 6-2, 5-7, 6-1.

All main draw matches will now be played only at the George E. Barnes Tennis Center, with the Girls’ 16s starting in the morning and the 18s in the afternoon. Since the Girls’ 16s are now into the round of 16, things will be getting a lot more interesting with the seeded players facing each other for the first time. Both age groups will also be playing doubles at Barnes Tennis Center in the late afternoon.
