Indian Wells, Calif. -- Many tennis clubs across the United States host USTA League matches, but few if any, have the history of San Francisco's Olympic Club.
Established in 1860, it is America's oldest athletic club and home of the USTA Northern California Section men's 5.0 team, which is competing this weekend at the USTA League Championships at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
The Olympic Club, which has seen its share of history through the years, offers 19 sports for over 5,000 members and will host it's fifth U.S. Open Golf Championship next year. The Club's tennis complex was built in 1936 and opened with an exhibition featuring tennis legends Don Budge, Gene Mako, Helen Wills Moody and Alice Marble.
"It has a strong tradition in many different sports including tennis," said David McCallum, captain of the men's Northern California 5.0 team. "We play for the Olympic Club. We do what we can to represent the club by being good sports and good athletes at the same time."
Some of the team's members also compete together in basketball and softball leagues at the club which helps strengthen the unity and comaraderie on the tennis team. "It's nice to get a group guys together who have a passion for tennis and push each other to get better," McCallum said. "That is the kind of environment you want to play in."
Even when his team had it's first practice earlier this year in March, McCallum had a special feeling about their chances of reaching tha Nationals. "We practice together, we play together. It's been an incredible journey and a real pleasure and honor to captain this team," he said. "It a group of fantastic guys and it's been a fantastic experience."
