October 20, 2011 05:15 PM
Young Americans Irina Falconi and Christina McHale will be competing for medals tomorrow at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico. Falconi, the No. 2 seed, will be playing in the gold medal match against Miami resident Monica Puig, who represents Puerto Rico. McHale will be competing for the bronze medal and will face Argentina's Florencia Molinero.
Falconi and McHale are also teamed together in tonight’s doubles semifinals as the No. 2 seed.
The Pan American Games are held every four years in the year immediately prior to the Olympic Games, and tennis has been contested at the Games since the event’s inception in 1951. Among the Americans who have won a gold medal at the Pan American Games are Althea Gibson (1959), Pam Shriver (1991) and Paul Goldstein (1999); other Americans who have competed include Arthur Ashe, Patrick McEnroe and Chanda Rubin.
